PUNJABI AKHAANS AND FOLK SONGS

I was always fascinated by the Punjabi AKHAANS which, in my childhood and adolescence, my mother, the late Prakash Devi Kapur, and, later on, when I got married into Chopra Family my mother-in- law, the late Rajkumariji Chopra, often quoted to drive home a point. I started collecting these AKHAANS and was greatly surprised to find in them wit, humour, satire and hidden advices. I felt that I must compile them in order to acquaint other Punjabis, especially living outside the Punjab, with this rich cultural and literary heritage. I have also included in this book, for ready reference, some folk-songs usually sung on ceremonial occasions, love ditties, good and bad omens according to Punjabi folk-lore, which have a great cultural significance. This, in short, is the reason for bringing out this book. I hope this compilation will serve the purpose outlined above. Sincere thanks are due to my daughter, Anu Dhawan, and my son, Shiv Rahul Chopra, for assisting me in compiling the information and for proof reading of the book.
